What are cookies?

An HTTP cookie (also called web cookieInternet cookiebrowser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user's computer by the user's web browser while the user is browsing. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information or to record the user's browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited in the past).

How cookies work?

What cookies are used by Moodle

The essential one is the session cookie, usually called MoodleSession. You must allow this cookie into your browser to provide continuity and maintain your login from page to page. When you log out or close the browser this cookie is deleted (in your browser and on the server).

The other cookie is purely for convenience, usually called something like MOODLE-ID. It just remembers your username within the browser. This means when you return to this site the username field on the login page will be already filled out for you. It is safe to refuse this cookie - you will just have to retype your username every time you log in.

As you use Moodle, information about the courses, activities and resources you interact with will also be stored and linked to your profile information.

Each access to Moodle as well as viewing of files will be protocolled.  The following data are generated and used exclusively to find and correct system errors.

Access to the protocolled data is limited exclusively to the Moodle System Administrators.
Moodle's internal messaging system may not be used for commercial purposes.

How long is my data stored?

Your personal data is stored as long as you are enrolled in one or more Moodle online courses on this site. Course data is deleted 4 years after the end date for each course and profile information will be deleted when an account has not been accessed for 12 consecutive months.
